What the hell was he doing there, you ask?

1) His girlyfriend, Kate Hudson, was also a presenter.

2) He wanted to personally introduce his "friend", Jay-Z. (A-Rod hasn't been this obsessed with a celebrity since the Madonna days.)

The lame introduction aside, "Empire State of Mind" was fire, especially Alicia Key's "New York, New York" intro.
